Theatre of the Republic
The Savannah Sipping Society Sunday
September 23, 2018 - 3:00 PM
In this delightful, laugh-a-minute comedy, four unique Southern women, all needing to escape the sameness of their day-to-day routines, are drawn together by Fate— and an impromptu happy hour—and decide it’s high time to reclaim the enthusiasm for life they’ve lost through the years. Randa, a perfectionist and workaholic, is struggling to cope with a surprise career derailment that, unfortunately, reveals that she has no life and no idea how to get one. Dot, still reeling from her husband’s recent demise and the loss of their plans for an idyllic retirement, faces the unsettling prospect of starting a new life from scratch—and all alone. Earthy and boisterous Marlafaye, a good ol’ Texas gal, has blasted into Savannah in the wake of losing her tom-cattin’ husband to a twenty-three-year-old dental hygienist. The strength of her desire to establish a new life is equaled only by her desire to wreak a righteous revenge on her ex. Also new to town, Jinx, a spunky ball of fire, offers her services as a much-needed life coach for these women. Together, they discover lasting friendships and a renewed determination to live in the moment. Appropriate for all audiences.
The Palmetto Mastersingers
Male Choral Ensemble
Saturday, March 9, 2019- 7:00 PM
The Palmetto Mastersingers have been entertaining audiences in Columbia, South Carolina, nationally, and internationally since 1981. Dr. Arpad Darazs, music professor at the University of South Carolina, organized the group as an opportunity for men to continue singing outstanding choral music beyond their college years. Under Dr. Darazs’ leadership, the Mastersingers won critical acclaim at competitions in Hungary (Dr. Darazs’ native land) and Wales. The Mastersingers have sung in the Notre Dame in Paris, St Peter’s in the Vatican, The Dom in Cologne, St Marks in Venice, St Stephen’s in Budapest, and other venues in France, Germany, Italy, Russia, China, and Canada. Locally we have sung throughout the state, including an overflow audience at the Circular Congregation Church in Charleston as part of the 2015 Piccolo Spoleto festival. Under the direction of Dr. Lillian Quackenbush, 2018 marks the 36th season of “South Carolina’s Musical Ambassadors.”
Appropriate for all audiences.
